This award provides essential knowledge for professionals working with historic or traditionally constructed buildings, typically those built before 1919. The course explores how to improve energy efficiency while preserving the unique materials, design, and performance characteristics of these properties. Older and traditional buildings require a careful, fabric-first approach to retrofit and maintenance. This qualification helps learners recognise the differences between traditional and modern construction, understand the causes of moisture and deterioration, and make informed recommendations that maintain heritage value while reducing energy use. The qualification is aligned with PAS 2035 and TrustMark requirements.
This qualification is aimed at professionals involved in retrofit, energy efficiency, or building conservation. It is particularly valuable for:
There are no formal entry requirements, although learners should have a basic understanding of building construction or energy efficiency principles.
This course is delivered by our external partner, Synergy Training Centre.
It is recommended that you spend 6 hours of self-study on this course, but this is self-paced through the online learner platform.
This course will be assessed through a combination of case studies, portfolio evidence, and professional discussion. You will need to demonstrate an understanding of building pathology, appropriate interventions, and client communication in retrofit contexts.
This qualification has been developed to raise awareness of older, traditional or vulnerable buildings (e.g. buildings built prior to 1919). It sets out the Trustmark Standards for the PAS 2035 Retrofit Assessor standards required be able to carry out higher risk project assessments. On completion of the qualification, you will be able to recognise the age, nature and characteristics of older and traditional buildings and assess options for the introduction of energy efficiency measures for older and traditional buildings, making recommendations and giving advice on the introduction of energy efficiency measures.
You will have to complete the course before 30 June 2026.
All course materials will be accessible through the online learner platform, including Historic England's Understanding Historic Buildings - A Guide to Good Recording Practice., as well as specification and guidance on BSI PAS 2035:2023 Retrofitting dwellings for improved energy efficiency.
This course is suitable for people who may already be working in a role where they have responsibility for producing energy performance certificates or retrofit assessments, or for other professionals in the sector wishing to raise their awareness of the challenges and requirements of retrofitting older and traditional buildings.
After passing this course, you will have gained a Level 3 Award in Energy Efficiency for Older and Traditional Buildings, which will provide a valuable insight for advancing your career and contributing to high-quality, sustainable housing projects. This award will benefit many roles within construction and building management, as well as enhancing your 'green skills' profile.
This course is delivered through a mix of online study, tutor-led workshops and case-based exercises designed to reflect real-world practice.
