Module 1 - Introduction to climate; the global energy system and sustainability
The aim of this session is to provide participants with a foundational understanding of the Earth's system, including the role of greenhouse gases and carbon emissions in shaping our climate. Participants will learn about the different types of climates, the relationship between carbon dioxide and global temperatures, and the importance of international agreements like the Montreal Protocol in mitigating environmental impacts.
Module 2 - Understanding energy fundamentals
The aim of this course is to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of how electricity is generated, the largest sources of generation, and the role of electricity imports. Participants will learn about the ongoing changes in the electricity system, the importance of electricity transmission, and the concepts of net zero and energy transition. The course will also explore how these elements contribute to the shift toward more sustainable energy systems and what this means for the future.
Module 3 - Identifying key organisations
The aim of this course is to provide participants with an in-depth understanding of government structures at national, regional, and local levels, focusing on how legislation, strategy, regulation, and standards are applied in the context of energy and climate change. Participants will gain insight into the key policies that govern energy production, consumption, and sustainability, as well as learn about the role of energy performance certificates in assessing energy efficiency. This course will equip learners with the knowledge necessary to navigate and contribute to the policy landscape surrounding energy and climate action.
Module 4 - Tenure & fuel poverty
The aim of this course is to provide participants with a clear understanding of housing tenure, including different types of tenure and the role of housing stock in determining access to housing. Participants will gain insight into the rights and responsibilities of both landlords and tenants, and learn about the current challenges in housing and house building. Additionally, the course will explore the issue of fuel poverty, examining its causes, impacts and potential solutions.
Module 5 - Housing stock and construction
The aim of this course is to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of different property types, including their structural and architectural variations. Participants will learn about various construction methods, including floor and roof types, as well as how the age of a building can influence its design, construction materials and maintenance needs. The course will offer a detailed exploration of these elements to help participants better understand property characteristics and their implications.
Module 6 - Energy in the home
The aim of this course is to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to manage common household issues related to energy and housing, including heating controls, damp, mould and condensation. Participants will learn about preventative measures for these problems, as well as who holds responsibility for addressing them. The course will also explore behaviour change strategies to mitigate issues, consumer vulnerabilities, key energy terms (such as MPAN, MPRN) and the role of meters. By the end of the course, participants will be able to identify and address common housing-related energy challenges effectively.
Module 7 - Retrofit, ventilation and heating systems
The aim of this course is to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of retrofitting, including the key principles, risks and considerations involved in upgrading existing buildings. Participants will gain knowledge of the regulatory framework surrounding retrofitting, the role of energy assessments and how thermal insulation, ventilation and airtightness contribute to improving building efficiency and sustainability. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with the tools and understanding needed to effectively plan, implement and assess retrofit projects.
Module 8 - Renewable technologies
The aim of this course is to provide participants with a thorough understanding of renewable energy, including key sources of renewable energy and the technologies that harness them. Participants will explore the various renewable technologies available for domestic use including solar, wind, biomass and more. The course will also cover smart tariffs, helping participants understand how these innovative pricing structures work and how they can benefit from renewable energy solutions at home.
Module 9 - Billing and tariffs
The aim of this course is to provide participants with a clear understanding of different energy tariff types, including the price cap and how it affects consumers. Participants will learn how to read and interpret an energy bill, understand key terms and charges, and gain the ability to make energy-related decisions based on their billing information. The course will also cover essential energy conversions, helping participants understand energy units and measurements used in their bills and consumption.
