Home Upgrade Grant

(Phase 2)

The Home Upgrade Grant phase 2 (HUG2) is for off-gas grid homes. This means homes which are not heated using mains gas, such as properties that use oil, liquid petroleum gas (LPG), coal, solid fuels, or electricity for heating purposes. Households are still eligible for the scheme if they are connected to mains gas for something other than heating (such as cooking).

Households connected to the mains gas grid for heating purposes are not eligible, including where the primary heating source of a mains gas boiler is broken, and the secondary heating source is electricity.

This scheme is now OPEN.

Coventry City Council has obtained funding through the UK Government Heat to Help schemes to improve the energy efficiency of low-income households with low EPC rated homes.

The HUG2 scheme aims to improve the warmth and comfort of homes that do not have mains-gas heating, whilst also reducing energy bills, carbon emissions and levels of fuel poverty across the county.

A range of energy efficiency improvements have been made available through this scheme and include clean heating solutions, such as air source heat pumps.

Please note that all applications are subject to a technical survey and an application acceptance does not guarantee that work will go ahead.

What’s available

Coventry City Council has been allocated funding to provide energy efficiency upgrades which could include:

  • external wall insulation
  • solar PV
  • cavity wall insulation
  • loft insulation
  • heat pumps
  • room-in-roof insulation
  • replacement of windows and doors

Who is eligible for funding

An applicant and their property will need to meet all of the following criteria:

  • you are a homeowner or rent privately
  • the property does not use mains gas as the primary heating source
  • the property has an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) of D, E, F or G – if the property does not have an EPC, then one will be arranged free of charge
  • the whole household has a combined annual income of under £31,000 (gross) or you live in an income-check-exempt postcode area

If eligible, a whole house assessment will be conducted and you will be provided with recommendations on what energy-efficiency measures are most suitable for your property.

The government has deemed that certain postcodes automatically meet the income eligibility criteria. This means that off gas grid and EPC D-G homes in these postcode areas are automatically eligible for the Home Upgrade Grant.

To find out if you live in one of the automatically eligible postcodes, please click this link: Coventry City Council IMD eligible postcodes (opens a PDF in a new tab).

Properties in the private rented sector are eligible for this scheme but only where the landlord has no more than 4 properties. Please note that if you are a landlord, you will be expected to contribute to the cost of any works undertaken.
