Sustainable Community pages:
It is an unfortunate fact that in the UK many people believe that the actions they take to save energy, recycle and become more environmentally friendly do not have an effect on climate change. It is true that the actions of one person alone may not change the course our world is taking but there are now thousands of people proactively changing their lives in order to save the future of their family generations to come. The actions of many do affect what happens to our planet and in a bid to enforce this point, there are many towns across the UK taking matters into their own hands when it comes to building a sustainable future.
Communities which work together to achieve a goal have always been a powerful force and the UK is seeing a whole host of towns and villages taking steps to create sustainable and self sufficient ways of saving energy, sourcing energy and living in an environmentally conscious way.
Some towns have established car sharing schemes, set up wind turbines to power the towns electricity supply, enforced sustainable building methods to cut down on carbon emissions and even invested in hybrid public transport. Contact your local government offices to find out if there are any schemes in your area.
The government itself also launched a Sustainable Communities Plan in 2003 which set out long term plans to create more energy efficient towns, villages and communities. You can read more about this at http://www.communities.gov.uk/communities/sustainablecommunities/sustainablecommunities/
The government have also focused on the methods of house building in order to create better homes which are more energy efficient and by 2016 all new homes built must be zero carbon, which means that the house does not have a negative impact in terms of carbon emissions. The energy which is saved or created in the home will cancel out any carbon emissions created by appliances or energy used.
