Saving Energy
Saving energy is not simply about helping the environment and increasing the longevity of the planet; it is about looking at how we live our lives and what we spend on keeping warm, having hot water, entertainment and transport.
Saving energy is now more important than ever as the UK population experiences price rises for gas, electric and oil. For many years the UK has benefited from the North Sea as a producer of oil and gas but the supply has diminished and our power is now generated from imported fuel.

Keeping Warm
It is estimated that over 400,000 people will experience fuel poverty for the first time this winter in addition to the 3 million already struggling to afford to adequately heat their homes. The government is looking to eradicate fuel poverty by 2016 but unless we tackle some of the basic ways to save energy the target may not be met.
Space heating accounts for most of the energy we use in our homes but many properties do not adequately retain the heat generated inside.
There are some simple steps we can take to keep warm and save energy to prevent wasting the money we are spending to heat our homes:
- 1. Draught proof your doors and windows
- 2. Install keyhole covers and letterbox brushes to keep out the cold
- 3. Put thermal lining on all curtains
- 4. Hang a thick curtain over draughty doors
- 5. Insulate walls and roof spaces (see our grants pages for financial help)
- 6. Put reflective panels behind radiators
- 7. Only heat rooms which are occupied
- 8. Wear more layers to keep warm
- 9. Only turn heating on when the property is occupied
- 10. Turn thermostats down 1 or 2 degrees to save energy depending on your health needs
