Reduce Office Equipment Energy Emissions
UK businesses contribute a significant amount to the carbon emissions emitted into the atmosphere across the nation and there are some simple steps every business can take to significantly reduce their output. However it is important for every individual in your business to embrace these steps or you will find that in three months you are back to square one. Most of the actions are quick and easy and it simply costs a little bit of time and effort to implement and maintain an energy efficient office environment.
Here are ten easy steps to a greener office:
- Turn off computers
- Turn off monitors
- Turn off all appliances at the plug socket and remove plugs (kettles, microwaves, drinks and sweet dispensers)
- Turn off all lights (office, lobby, reception, hallways, toilets)
- Install movement sensitive security lights
- Buy recycled office products (paper, letterhead, envelopes, notepads, pens, pencils, toilet paper and towels)
- Recycle all waste paper, card, plastic, aluminium and cartridges
- Place heating on a daily timer and ensure it is switched off when no one is in the office
- Place air conditioning on a timer or open windows as an alternative solution where possible
- Use energy efficient light bulbs
In order to encourage your employees to adopt more energy efficient practices, ask for suggestions, provide incentives for car sharing or travel by train or bicycle. Encourage people to consider their own impact on the environment when they are at work and what they could do collectively and individually to be more energy efficient.
