Insulation Grants
Both the government and energy suppliers offer help to people who do not have adequate insulation. Most of the UK‘s housing stock is made up of older buildings which were not built to today’s modern methods of construction.
Many properties are not energy efficient and lose too much heat to the outside. Insulation is one of the main ways in which people can stay warm and still reduce the amount of energy they use, helping to reduce high fuel bills.

Loft Insulation
In an average home around 25% of the heat you pay for is lost through the roof. Increasing your loft insulation can reduce your heating bills by up to 20%.
This is particularly important if you plan to convert your loft to provide additional living space because you will lose the best place to lay insulation which is over the ceiling joists.
If you want to provide a floor to your loft for storage it is important that you don't compress the insulation or it will lose its effectiveness.
In order to make homes retain more heat, The Building Regulations require all new homes to have the equivalent of 270mm of insulation fitted between and over the ceiling joists. Insulation can also be fitted to the rafters. Adding more insulation in your loft space will keep the heat you generate from your heating system inside your house.
A good way of spotting a well insulated home is when there is frost or snow on the roof. If it has melted quickly it is likely that heat is being lost through the roof. If the frost or snow remains, then little or no heat is being transferred.
Cavity Wall Insulation
Even more heat is lost though external walls, up to 35% in most homes and effective insulation can save you up to 25% of your heating bills.
If your home has cavity walls you can insulate the gap between the walls to help keep the heat from your rooms inside the house. Again there is a lot of heat lost through the external walls of a property.
Cavity wall insulation costs between £300 and £500 depending on the size of your home and loft insulation from £50 to £250. The government has recognised the importance of installing these measures in as many homes as possible and for those who are on benefits, or over 70 there is a lot of help available but everyone can obtain subsidised loft and cavity wall insulation if you need them.
You can access the free and subsidised schemes through us if you want to by ringing 0800 988 2881 and we will tell you what is available in your area and for your circumstances.
See our loft insulation and cavity wall insulation pages for details on grants and funding available and find out if you are eligible for help.
