Home Energy Efficiency Training
By October 2008 all buildings which are to be bought, sold or rented will need to have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). The EPC is designed to provide potential buyers or tenants with a guide as to how well the building performs in terms of energy efficiency and environmental impact.
The Energy Performance Certificate has to be issued by an approved assessor who will conduct a survey of the building and rate it from A, being the best to G being the worst.
For those wishing to become a home energy assessor there are various courses available. In order to qualify as a home energy assessor you will need a Level 3 Diploma in Domestic Energy Assessment (DEA).
The qualification involves an examination and up to five EPC's which will be graded by an examiner. If you have no prior or relevant experience in energy efficiency you may need to undertake prior qualifications before the DEA Diploma.
There are three organisations from which you can obtain a DEA Diploma:
- National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA)
- Awarding Body for the Built Environment (ABBE)
- City & Guilds
You may also need to become a member of an accreditation scheme in order to begin issuing EPC's in the domestic sector.
Once qualified you will be able to:
- Inspect and survey domestic properties
- Issue EPC's for domestic dwellings
- Provide advice and information on energy efficiency
- Recommend energy efficiency in the home
