Energy Efficiency Rating
Products
In order to encourage people to consider the energy they are using inside their homes, the Energy Saving Trust established Energy Efficiency Recommended labels. Initially these were given to kitchen appliances such as fridges and freezers but now extend to other products.
Many people do not understand how much energy appliances use, so the labels have become a good guide for home owners looking to purchase new products. European law now states that energy labels must be displayed on the following products:
- Fridges
- Freezers
- Fridge-Freezer
- Washing Machines
- Electric Ovens
- Dishwashers
- Air conditioners
- Lamps
- Electric Tumble Dryers
Energy ratings range from A to G. An A rating is the most energy efficient and some classifications now reach to A+ and A++
The labels should tell you how much energy the item will use per kilowatt hour. You will then be able to work out how much the appliance will cost you over a year by finding out the price you pay per Kilowatt hour from your energy supplier.
There are devices now available which will also tell you how much electric the appliance is using, which will save you some of the mathematical hassle.
Buildings
Energy ratings are now also given for buildings. If you are looking to sell, buy or rent a property you should be able to see the overall energy rating for the building. Again the level ranges from A to G. The more energy efficient your home is the higher the rating you will receive.
To obtain an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) you will need to engage an accredited assessor. They will undertake a survey of your home and take into account the size, age and energy efficiency. Products such as TV's washing machines, fridges and freezers are not included as these may not be part of the sale or rental agreement.
Factors such as insulation, lighting, heating and hot water system, double glazing, draught proofing and renewable energy solutions will all be taken into account by the assessor.
