Energy Efficiency Advice
It is important for everyone to start becoming more energy efficient and there are now hundreds of very simple actions you can take which will make a big difference. In this section of the website we will provide you with lots of hints and tips to become more energy efficient, save money and the environment.
It is however important to understand exactly why we need to take action. Below is a brief outline as to why energy saving has become so important on a global level.
The Basic Facts:
What are Carbon Emissions?
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is a gas which is emitted into the atmosphere as a result of burning fossil fuels. When plants and organic matter grow the process of photosynthesis removes CO2 from the atmosphere. The carbon builds the body of the plant and the oxygen is returned. When the plants are burnt the CO2 is released back into the atmosphere. The CO2 in the world would be perfectly balanced if there was no burning of fossil fuels. Because industry and our livelihoods depend on fossil fuels the balance has shifted to cause an excessive amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.
What is Climate Change?
As a result of the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere along with other greenhouse gases the heat which is provided from the sun to the earth cannot escape and is absorbed by the gases. This is called the ‘Greenhouse Effect’ which is a natural characteristic of the planet making it around 20degC warmer than it would otherwise be and giving us a comforable climate. However, over the last 100 years or so the concentration of CO2 has risen by around 30% which will lead to some extreme situations.
The result
If the earth continues to warm up at the current rate, sea levels will rise, there will be extremes in weather such as flooding and drought and catastrophic natural disasters.
The Solution
The world is now pulling together to reduce carbon emissions which is the major contributor to the warming effect. The global focus is now moving towards renewable energy and energy efficiency.
Take Action
Over 40% of all carbon emissions in the UK are from our homes and things we do in our daily lives. We can all play a significant part in reducing carbon emissions in the UK by taking some simple actions.
The Benefits
You will save money year on year if you take steps to become more energy efficient today.
This section of the website provides clear and practical advice to help you get started on the road towards energy efficiency and a cleaner environment.
