The external walls in our homes allow heat to transfer from the inside to the outside. In houses built over the last 50 years the method of construction was to create a cavity between the outside and inside layer of bricks. Today it is recognised that this cavity helps to let heat out of the house.
Cavity wall insulation is a process by which insulation material is injected into the walls and the cavity is filled. The work usually costs from £300 to £500 depending on the size of the property and number of external walls.
There are grants available and a list of current schemes and qualifying criteria are listed below:
Warm Front is a scheme provided for those living in England and gives financial help to those who need heating and insulation. The current scheme runs until 31st March 2012 or until the funding is used.
Grants range from £3,500 for gas central heating and cavity wall insulation and up to £6,000 for oil central heating systems. You must also live in an energy inefficient home (SAP rating of 55 or less) which will be assessed by technical survey.
To check whether you can take advantage of a Warm Front grant, you will need to be receiving one or more of the following:
Child under 5 living with you
Child Tax Credit with disability element
Disabled Child Premium
Disablilty Premium with enhanced or severe disability element
Pensioner Premium with higher or enhanced premium
