Cavity Wall Insulation

Insulation is the best way to keep your house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Insulation keeps heat in during the winter when we put our heating on and prevents heat from outside warming up our homes during the summer months.

In a home where there is little or no insulation up to a third of the heat we generate in our homes can be lost through the walls. There is a simple solution to this and one which is likely to cost you less than £500; cavity wall insulation.

There are grants available from the government and subsidised schemes from energy suppliers and you can find out about these on our grants pages. Even if you live in a mid terraced house, your front and rear walls could be losing vital energy especially if you have windows and doors in these areas as well.

What is cavity wall insulation?

After the 1930's, most but not all houses have been built with a cavity between the internal and external brickwork. As a result of this standard a significant amount of heat is transferred from inside the building to outside. Cavity wall insulation is a material, which is injected into the gap between the walls helping to decrease the amount of heat which reaches the outside.

An average sized home of around three bedrooms takes between 3 to 4 hours to insulate.

At current energy prices the annual saving from cavity wall insulation is around £200 for an average house. In addition the amount of CO2 a household emits into the atmosphere is reduced by 800kg per year.

There are 26 million homes throughout the UK and so far only 800,000 have installed cavity wall insulation. Many of these houses hold people who will reach fuel poverty this year and so it is vital that everyone who can take advantage of the grants and help available should do so to save money on energy bills.

So many houses switch on their heating every winter for it only to warm the air outside the house. It may seem illogical to leave the door open in the winter, but effectively this is what is happening in homes throughout the UK which are not fully insulated.
