Boiler Grants
If your boiler is more than 10 years old it is likely that it will not be performing as energy efficiently as it should and could be costing you more money than you should be paying. Installing a new boiler can be costly and with new laws stating that all new boilers have to be high efficiency if supplied by gas, some people may need to have additional changes made to their heating system.
High efficiency boilers work by extracting more heat from the flue gas. This means less heat excapes from the flue and so less fuel is used. Replacing a old boiler with a high efficiency one is likely to reduce your heating bills by as much as 30%.
Combi boilers do not use a hot water cylinder as the water is heated instantly rather than being held in the cylinder. They are slightly more expensive than regular boilers but you gain extra space by removing the hot water cylinder and water storage taks in the roof.
If you need help there are grants available from the government and possibly from your local council. If you are living in council or housing association property, contact the property owner if you think your boiler needs replacing. If you own your home or rent it privately then you could qualify for help through the Warm Front scheme although you will need to be on a qualifying benefit.
These schemes are designed to help make the UK's older housing stock more energy efficient. This will reduce household bills and help the environment.
Boiler manufacturers also have regular discount offers and approved installer schemes to help those on lower incomes to afford to upgrade their boiler system.
If none of the options above are applicable to you, it is advisable to have your existing boiler systems serviced once a year. Many people have noticed a difference in their energy use as a result of regular services to their boiler.
To help further reduce the amount of energy you use through your boiler, installing renewable energy solutions such as solar, photovoltaics or wood stoves and biomass can help to keep your bills down in the long term. However there is a significant initial investment, again there are grants and funding available to help with renewable energy projects in the home.
